[Day 1] - The 43rd Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) and its associated meetings officially commenced today in Kuching, Sarawak. The meeting was presided over by YBhg. Dato’ Haji Mad Zaidi Bin Mohd Karli, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), who serves as the Chair of the 43rd SOME on behalf of Malaysia.
Under Malaysia’s chairmanship this year, the focus is placed on the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) Initiative and the finalisation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) for the Post-2025–2030 period. Senior officials were updated on the latest progress and developments in these two priority areas. Discussions and briefings also covered key programme areas under APAEC, including the Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline (TAGP), Clean Coal Technology, Renewable Energy, and Regional Energy Policy.
On the sidelines of the meeting, various bilateral discussions were held between ASEAN Member States to further strengthen regional energy cooperation. Malaysia conducted bilateral meetings with Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to exchange views on advancing the region’s energy transition agenda.
Ultimately, the 43rd SOME serves as a critical platform to reaffirm ASEAN Member States’ collective commitment to accelerating a clean, secure, and sustainable energy transition in the lead-up to the Post-2025 APAEC phase.
The first day ended with a Welcoming Dinner held at Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching in the evening. The event was graced by the presence of YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, as well as The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak.
